Our Mission
Friends, Family, and Neighbors creates pathways for system-impacted youth to build agency, develop skills, and restore connections to community through arts education, vocational training, and consistent, compassionate support throughout their individual journeys.
We meet young people where they are. Our programs are shaped by listening to youth—their interests, aspirations, challenges, and the skills they want to develop—and continually adapting our teaching to ensure that each young person has a meaningful opportunity to learn and grow. We work to remove financial and institutional barriers that can make creative, educational, and career opportunities feel out of reach, finding ways to turn what youth want to learn into something they can access and pursue.
Our commitment does not end when a young person struggles, makes a mistake, moves between facilities, or returns home. We believe growth, healing, and rehabilitation are ongoing processes that require patience, compassion, consistency, and people who are willing to remain present. By building continuity between programming during incarceration and opportunities in the community, we seek to ensure that young people are not abandoned at critical points in that journey.
Our mission is to create spaces where young people are empowered as artists, collaborators, and members of their communities—where they are listened to, encouraged to imagine what is possible for themselves, and given the tools, opportunities, and support to shape their own futures.
Our Values
MEETING YOUTH WHERE THEY ARE
Every young person enters our programs with different experiences, interests, strengths, needs, and aspirations. We adapt our teaching and programming to the young person rather than expecting the young person to adapt to us.
CONSISTENCY & CONTINUITY
We believe one of the most meaningful things we can offer is our continued presence. Growth does not happen on a fixed timeline, and support should not disappear when circumstances change. We work to maintain relationships and continuity as youth move through facilities, programs, reentry, and their communities.
LISTENING TO YOUTH
Young people should have a voice in the programs intended to serve them. We listen to what youth want to learn, what they hope to accomplish, and what they believe would benefit them. Their ideas help shape our curriculum, programming, and future opportunities.
COMPASSION
We approach young people with patience, care, and humanity. We recognize that some youth have experienced environments where compassion, stability, and encouragement have not always been available to them. We strive to create spaces where young people can experience those things consistently.
ACCESS
A young person's financial circumstances, incarceration, or lack of previous access should not determine what they are allowed to explore. When youth express an interest in a medium, skill, career, or opportunity, we work creatively to make that opportunity accessible whenever possible.
ADAPTABILITY
If something is not reaching a young person, we find another way. We continually evaluate and reshape our lessons, teaching methods, materials, and programs to respond to the youth we are working alongside.
AGENCY
We create opportunities for youth to make meaningful choices, develop their own ideas, discover their interests, and take ownership of their work. Our role is not to determine a young person's future for them, but to expand the tools and possibilities available to them as they shape it themselves.
COMMUNITY
Friends, Family, and Neighbors, teachers, mentors, artists, employers, and community organizations can all become part of a young person's network of support. We believe rehabilitation and reentry cannot rest solely on the individual; communities also have a responsibility to make space for their young people to return, participate, contribute, and belong.
GROWTH WITHOUT ABANDONMENT
We understand growth as an ongoing and sometimes nonlinear process. A setback does not erase progress, and a difficult moment does not make someone undeserving of support. We remain committed to finding new ways to reach young people rather than giving up when the first approach does not work.
Our Vision
We envision communities where system-impacted young people have the relationships, resources, opportunities, and creative freedom to imagine and build lives far beyond carceral settings.
Friends, Family, and Neighbors envisions a future for our youth beyond incarceration. We seek to build lasting pathways between the opportunities available to youth while they are incarcerated and the people, places, and resources that can continue supporting them when they return home.
Our vision is a community that does not give up on its young people—one that makes room for growth, recognizes that change is not always linear, and continues to show up through every stage of a young person’s journey.
